Just a week before our scheduled trip things weren't looking good. The Garnet Fire still blanketed Mammoth with thick smoke, so we were making contingency plans for Tahoe, and the Malibu had developed a problem that we didn't have time to track down and fix before the trip. We looked into a rental for Stella and me, or for the three of us. After our last hike, Bill's 1987 Toyota Van was making creaking noises in corners from the axle.
Then came calmer, wetter weather and the fire crews made rapid progress containing the Garnet Fire, and had it 100% contained two days before our trip, and the AQI in Mammoth was green. Bill had a mechanic examine his van, and we accepted his offer to drive the three of us. -F.
