Mammoth Trip, 2025

September 27

Horseshoe Slabs

When we arrived at the crag, we were pleased to find no-one else there, at least not yet. We busied ourselves gearing up, putting the helmets on, and hanging the quad anchor on the bolts. It was getting exciting! It occurred to me that this was the first time the three of us would actually be climbiung together in Mammoth without a guide along.

Also I realized I would not be comfortable leading from ground up. Even falling or jumping off from a foot or two up could result in injury, and the first couple moves seemed less trivial than I expected. I decided it would be prudent to top-rope the route once first, putting in the first two pieces of gear, as I would with a stick-clip. -F.
