Mammoth Trip, 2026

September 13

Convict Canyon

We continued upstream a little way, climbing steeply until it became clear that the trail had fizzled. We could see a nice smooth trail on the opposite bank. We explored, and I saw a couple of possibilities of crossing the stream over stepping stones, and offered to go first and then Stella could decide whether to follow or whether we turn around. She was still shaken from her fall.

Shortly a group of young people came by and we followed them and watched as they nimbly crossed like mountain goats. But even for a couple of them, it looked precarious, and Stella said, no, I'm not doing that. -F.

The creek was tempting, but it was too deep, too wide, and too fast-moving. A fall would mean getting thoroughly wet and at least bruised. I pictured myself tumbling over the rocks and noped out. -S.
